Grade 8 Language Short Stories

Your good copy of your short story is due tomorrow (Thursday, May 31st). It should be typed out, double spaced and approximately 3-4 pages (no more than 4!!) You should be working on the revising and editing steps of the writing process, since you've had 2 weeks of class time to work on this story.

Grade 8 Science - Oil and Fertilizer Spills

Poster and Power Point Presentations will begin tomorrow immediately after lunch.

Gr. 6 - EQAO

EQAO is coming up and I wanted to remind students and parents about some details. The grade 6s have two Language sections and one Math section to complete. They will be writing one section per day on Tuesday (29th), Wednesday (30th) and Thursday (31st) of next week. Each section will take the full morning to complete and the students will follow their regular schedules in the afternoon.

Please ensure that your students get a good night's sleep all next week and eat a full, healthy breakfast each morning. Also, be sure to send a full water bottle and healthy snack to school with them.

For math I have sent past EQAO test sheets home with the students a few times over the past month. I hope that the students have reviewed and completed the pages as it will familiarize them with the format of the test and the content that may be included.

Gr. 8 Math - Integers

Complete questions 2, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the Unit Review on pages 411/412.

You will also be having a test on integers on Tuesday, May 29th. You will be tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers and plotting ang interpreting information on the coordinate grid.

Gr. 7 Math & History

Math:  Complete questions 4, 5, 6, 8, and 11 of the unit Review on page 360. You will also be having an integer test on Tuesday, May 29th.

History:  Please read pages 90 to 95 in the textbook and be prepared to answer some basic questions about the information you have read.

Gr. 6 Math - Prime Numbers

Today we wrote the number 36 as a multiplication of prime numbers as follows:
2 x 2 x 3 x 3

Your homework is to do the same for the number 100.

Those students who were absent today still need to complete their homework from yesterday also. That work was the 'Explore' section on page 48 and questions 1 & 2 on page 49.

Weekly Spelling Tests Are Back!!

Grade 6 and 7 students have been given the assignment to chose a topic and make their own spelling list, sentences and facilitate the weekly spelling test.

Health Class

Mrs. Ricketts, Mr. Marshall and Ms. Smye's class have started the Growth and Development units in Health Class. Feel free to check out the curriculum documents online (link is on home page of this blog) for exact details of what we will be discussing in class.

Grade 6 Science Mini Project

Each student has been assigned a Scientist that has made a significant contribution to the world of Electricity. They must answer the following questions;
1) When and where was he born?
2) When did he die?
3) What and when was his significant contribution to science?
4) What impact does the invention or discovery have on today's society?
5) 5 interesting facts about him (i.e. family, schooling, friends, other accomplishments etc. )

Students are to present their findings in one of the following formats;
Report, Poem/Song lyrics, Timeline, Drama/Skits, Interview format, Poster, Book review, Biography, Board Game, Journal Entry, Diary Entry, Diorama, Advertisement, Power Point, Fast Fact Flashcards with photos, Magazine article, News article, or Video/Play.

DUE: TUESDAY, MAY 22nd.

Gr. 8 Geography Test

Tuesday, May 15th there will be a geography test for gr. 8 students.  The test will cover the unit on "World Economic Systems".  The chapters covered are chapters 4 - 6 and information that we covered in geography class.

Language gr. 6 and 7 - Picture book due date extension

Students have a new due date to hand in their completed picture books.  The date is MONDAY, MAY 14TH.

TRACK AND FIELD

Just a reminder that the first Track and Field Meet is this Friday at York University. The bus will be leaving TW at 8:00am with the first group of students (all students competing in an event from 9:30-11:30) and the second group of students (students competing in events from 12:00-3:00pm) will be picked up at approximately 11:00am at TW.
Don't forget to dress appropriately, bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. If you have a TW t-shirt, you can wear that to the meet.
Schedules will be given out tomorrow.

Centennial College Surveys

All the students who attended the Centennial College Workshops on May 3rd, must hand in the completed student and guardian/parent surveys by Friday, May 11th.

Grade 6 and 7 Picture Books for language

This is the timeline for finishing your picture books:

Due Monday, May 7th - ALL writing for picture book
Due Friday, May 11th - ALL graphic illustrations AND cover page - PICTURE BOOK IS COMPLETE

To ensure you are successful in the publishing of your picture book follow these guidelines:
  • story has characters, setting, problem, rising action, climax and resolution that make sense to readers
  • 2 similes and 1 metaphor
  • story has been edited, it makes sense and spelling and grammar is correct
  • artwork that is consistent and adds to the story
  • a cover page that highlights the story and creates interest in the book
CARDBOARD NEEDED - Our books will use cardboard to make the hardcover picture books.  Donations to our class of CARDBOARD BOXES would be greatly appreciated.
