Welcome Back and 7 / 8 Orientation Week Info.

Hello TW students and families,

Welcome back to school!  Mr. Marshall and I have planned "Orientation Week" for all grade 7 and 8 students.  We will be doing activities that focus on creating positive work habits and study skills.  Topics include: organization, time management, note taking, homework folders and community building within the TW school.  It is our aim to work with students and their families to support students to make personal goals and work diligently in their achievement.  It's great to be back and we look forward to a successful year!

Ballroom Dancing Semi-Finals and Team Match Finals

The following students have been selected to represent Terraview-Willowfield PS at the city-wide ballroom dancing competition:

The grade 6 ballroom dancing finals will take place at Our Lady of Victory Catholic school on Monday, June 18th - permission form to follow shortly.  If our students win at the semi-final stage they will move on to the finals on Tuesday, June 19th at the Palais Royale Ballroom in downtown Toronto.  We would like to congratulate our ballroom dancers and wish them much success!!!!!!!!

All students in the program will showcase their ballroom dancing skills during the last week of school at an assembly.  Also, students will present during the TW Spring Concert.  Keep dancing TW!

Canadian City Fact Sheet - Gr. 8 Geography

On Thursday June 7th,  grade 8 students will be given periods 7 and 8 to work on their Canadian city fact sheet in the computer lab.  They were given the research and fact sheet criteria in class on Monday this week.  The fact sheet is due Friday, June 8th.  This assignment is part of the Mobility, Migration and Culture unit.

Grade 8 Language Short Stories

Your good copy of your short story is due tomorrow (Thursday, May 31st). It should be typed out, double spaced and approximately 3-4 pages (no more than 4!!) You should be working on the revising and editing steps of the writing process, since you've had 2 weeks of class time to work on this story.

Gr. 6 - EQAO

EQAO is coming up and I wanted to remind students and parents about some details. The grade 6s have two Language sections and one Math section to complete. They will be writing one section per day on Tuesday (29th), Wednesday (30th) and Thursday (31st) of next week. Each section will take the full morning to complete and the students will follow their regular schedules in the afternoon.

Please ensure that your students get a good night's sleep all next week and eat a full, healthy breakfast each morning. Also, be sure to send a full water bottle and healthy snack to school with them.

For math I have sent past EQAO test sheets home with the students a few times over the past month. I hope that the students have reviewed and completed the pages as it will familiarize them with the format of the test and the content that may be included.

Gr. 8 Math - Integers

Complete questions 2, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 of the Unit Review on pages 411/412.

You will also be having a test on integers on Tuesday, May 29th. You will be tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers and plotting ang interpreting information on the coordinate grid.

Gr. 7 Math & History

Math:  Complete questions 4, 5, 6, 8, and 11 of the unit Review on page 360. You will also be having an integer test on Tuesday, May 29th.

History:  Please read pages 90 to 95 in the textbook and be prepared to answer some basic questions about the information you have read.

Grade 6 Science Mini Project

Each student has been assigned a Scientist that has made a significant contribution to the world of Electricity. They must answer the following questions;
1) When and where was he born?
2) When did he die?
3) What and when was his significant contribution to science?
4) What impact does the invention or discovery have on today's society?
5) 5 interesting facts about him (i.e. family, schooling, friends, other accomplishments etc. )

Students are to present their findings in one of the following formats;
Report, Poem/Song lyrics, Timeline, Drama/Skits, Interview format, Poster, Book review, Biography, Board Game, Journal Entry, Diary Entry, Diorama, Advertisement, Power Point, Fast Fact Flashcards with photos, Magazine article, News article, or Video/Play.

Gr. 8 Geography Test

Tuesday, May 15th there will be a geography test for gr. 8 students.  The test will cover the unit on "World Economic Systems".  The chapters covered are chapters 4 - 6 and information that we covered in geography class.

TRACK AND FIELD

Just a reminder that the first Track and Field Meet is this Friday at York University. The bus will be leaving TW at 8:00am with the first group of students (all students competing in an event from 9:30-11:30) and the second group of students (students competing in events from 12:00-3:00pm) will be picked up at approximately 11:00am at TW.
Don't forget to dress appropriately, bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. If you have a TW t-shirt, you can wear that to the meet.
Schedules will be given out tomorrow.

This is the timeline for finishing your picture books:

Due Monday, May 7th - ALL writing for picture book
Due Friday, May 11th - ALL graphic illustrations AND cover page - PICTURE BOOK IS COMPLETE

To ensure you are successful in the publishing of your picture book follow these guidelines:
  • story has characters, setting, problem, rising action, climax and resolution that make sense to readers
  • 2 similes and 1 metaphor
  • story has been edited, it makes sense and spelling and grammar is correct
  • artwork that is consistent and adds to the story
  • a cover page that highlights the story and creates interest in the book
CARDBOARD NEEDED - Our books will use cardboard to make the hardcover picture books.  Donations to our class of CARDBOARD BOXES would be greatly appreciated.

TW TRACK AND FIELD DAY

MONDAY, APRIL 30th is TW Grades 2-6 Track and Field Day!!! Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses ect. The grade 8's who are helping out with events first thing Monday morning should arrive to school by 8:20am to help set up the equipment.

Grade 7 & 8 Track and Field Days

Just a reminder that we will be doing Track and Field all afternoon on Thursday (provided it doesn't rain). Dress appropriately for the weather. We will continue with Track and Field next Tuesday afternoon as well.

Grade 8 Science/Language FLIP

Grade 7' and 8 Pottery Friday

Grade 6 Science

Metaphor and working on picture books

Create 1 metaphor (comparison NOT using like or as) to use in your picture book.  Be prepared to share it in class on Friday.

Students MUST be working at home on completing the writing, illustrations and editing their picture books.  We will begin making the actual books which involves sewing the pages and attaching them to cardboard this week.  STUDENTS MUST KNOW HOW MANY PAGES THEIR BOOKS WILL HAVE IN ORDER TO DO THIS.

Grade 6 Science - GET TEST SIGNED

The students received their Air and Flight final unit test back today. All tests must be signed by a guardian for Tuesday, April 24th.

CURLING DAY!!!

Get excited grade 7's and 8's!!!! TOMORROW IS CURLING DAY!!!

Don't forget to BRING a pair of CLEAN running shoes in a separate bag. They will not let you on the ice with your outdoor shoes on!!! A HELMET IS A MUST!!!! (bicycle, hockey or ski helmet will do).

Grade 8's must be at school at 8:00am. The bus leaves at 8:15am SHARP! We will be curling from 9:00am-11:00am. You will be back at school by 11:30am so you will be either staying at school or going home for lunch, whatever your regular routine is.

Grade 7's must be ready to board the bus at 11:30am. They will eat their packed lunches on the bus. We are curling from 12:00pm-2:00pm. You will be back at the school by 2:40pm.

Grade 7 - History & Math

For history you need to read pages 46 - 52 in your textbook and answer the following questions:

For math you have to investigate and answer the following dice game question:
Player A gets five points if they roll a 5 (one roll per turn).
Player B gets ten points if they roll two of the same number in a row (two rolls per turn).

Day of Pink - All grades

I forgot to mention this today. Tomorrow, April 11th,  is the International Day of Pink. The official website has this to say:
Day of Pink is the international day against bullying, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia in schools and communities. We invite everyone to celebrate diversity by wearing a pink shirt and by organizing activities in their workplaces, organizations, communities and schools.

The TDSB and Terraview-Willowfield PS support raising the awareness about and the elimination of these problems in our schools. Please support this initiative tomorrow.

Grade 7 History- Seigneurie Map

Your map of a New France seigneurie is due by the end of period 4 on Wednesday, March 27th. You are expected to fill the paper that I gave you. Everything that you would expect to find on a seigneurie and the individual habitant farms should be indicated in some way on the map. Think about the day to day lives of the Seigneur and the habitant families.
  • What would they need to have a successful, functioning farm through all the seasons of the year?
  • How many habitant farms might a Seigneur have on his land?
  • What might be needed on each farm? on the seigneurie?
  • What crops are they farming? Does that make a difference?
Above all, a map should be clear, neat, organized and easy to read.

Grade 6, 7 & 8 Math - Graphing

In all the math classes today we collected primary data about the students. For homework, all students are to choose a set of data (from two possibilities) and complete a graph. I explained to each class what type of graph I would like them to use for the data they collected. We have discussed the essential elements of all graphs and they should check to make sure that they have included those in their graph.
If they forgot to take the data sheet home or have lost it, I would suggest that they call/visit/text/Facebook a classmate to get the information.

Everyone's graph is due tomorrow in math class.

Grade 7-8 Curling - April 20th

All grade 7's and 8's will be going curling on April 20th. We will be going over the rules and curling etiquette in class. Students are to complete the permission forms and return them to school with $20 as soon as possible.

REMINDER: If you already paid for the ski trip to Albion Hills, that $20 will be used for your curling. You will only need to return the permission form.

YOU MUST WEAR A HOCKEY OR BICYCLE HELMET TO CURL!!! Please let Ms. Smye or Mr. Marshall know if you have any extra's for those who don't have one.

RUBE GOLDBERG DEVICES

Tomorrow we will be finishing up the presentations of the Rube Goldberg Devices. Some students have already presented and received their marks. The rest of the students must present tomorrow morning (Language class has been switched with Science class).

This project was completed at school and began two weeks before the March Break. Students were given approximately 10 hrs total to work on these projects. Several students used their time wisely, while others are still not close to being finished. All students will be bringing home a marking sheet with their grade for the project on Friday afternoon. Please share this with your parents.

Things to think about over the March Break....

1. Rube Goldberg Science Projects - You will have one more double science period to work on these projects on the first Monday we are back. Bring any last minute materials to school you think you may need.

2. GRAFFITI ART - You will have one more double art period on Tuesday to finish up all the graffiti art you have left. They are officially due on Friday, March 23rd.

3. LANGUAGE - Your only homework over the March Break is to read at least one of the following; novel, graphic novel, comic book, online article of any sort (more than 200 words), short story, newspaper article (more than 200 words), poetry (enough to add up to approximately 200 words), song lyrics of a song you are not very familiar with (search for lyrics by theme, ie. "love", "determination", "hope", "freedom", "conflict" etc. ). PLEASE BRING THE TEXT YOU READ INTO CLASS on MONDAY, MARCH 19th. We will be doing a short assignment on what you read.

Ms. Ricketts students - Excursion Thursday Mar. 8th to Wexford

Students have been given the permission forms for an excursion to Wexford CI. We will watch a variety show performance. We will leave the school at 12:15PM during lunch time so all students must be present at this time.

We will NOT BE GOING TO ALBION HILLS ON FRIDAY, MARCH 9th due to weather conditions.

After March Break we will organize another excursion to replace skiing. All money previously paid for Albion Hills will go toward the Wexford CI and replacement excursion. Any additional funds collected will be refunded back to parents after these 2 excursions.

Grade 6 and 7 language students are creating commercials for their board games. We have watched many in class and gone over techniques that are used in the making of commercials on TV. Students are ENCOURAGED to bring in items from home that could improve their performance such as: music to play in the background, sound makers, costumes, make-up, props

Grade 6 Math Test

The math test scheduled for today has been rescheduled to Monday. Having had the Junior Achievement presentation on Thursday, the students did not get a chance to review for the test, so it seemed fair to spend time reviewing today. Each student must have their own calculator for the test. They are not allowed to share a calculator.

CO-ED V-Ball Tryouts!!!

Just a reminder that the Monday morning tryout is cancelled due to elections being held in our gym. Therefore, the first tryout will be Tuesday, Feb 28th at 7:30am-8:30am and then again at 3:30-4:45pm. Don't forget to bring your completed permission form. Without it, you will not be able to attend.

NEW DUE DATE Geography Grade 8 Community Planning Assignment

As students will have ample class and computer time at school and have this weekend to work on the geography assignment, the due date has been change to TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH.
On Tuesday, Feb. 28th students will have a double period with computer time to make any finishing touches and submit their assignment at the end of the period.

A Rube Goldberg machine, contraption, invention, device, or apparatus is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex fashion, usually including a chain reaction.

Your very own Rube Goldberg is due Monday, March 26th.

Your R.G. must be a minimum of 6 steps and must complete a simple task.
Your R.G. must work from beginning to end within 3 attempts.

Grade 8 Geography Community Planning Assignment

Assignment - You have been offered the job to plan a community using the criteria provided in class. Students have been given the paper and will have class and computer lab time to complete the assignment. Any work not completed in class will need to be done for homework. Students may hand draw and / or use the computer to assemble the plan for their community.

Due date: Wednesday, February 29th. As we do not have geography on this date, I will come to Ms. Smye's class to collect all assignments.

Grade 8 Math Test - Patterning & Algebra

Your test is on Friday, to be completed in two parts during periods 2 and 4.
You are responsible for the following material:

  • identify and extend patterns
  • find the algebraic formula for the pattern rule
  • evaluate algebraic expressions
  • solve algebraic equations
You can study all of Unit 10 (except 10.4) and pages 28-31 from your textbook as well as the notes you have in your binder/notebook.

Novel Study Book Report Assessment

Grade 6 and 7 students have been given their novel study book report assessment rubrics. Students were assessed on reading and writing. They have been instructed to share these grades at home with parents. They are currently working on board games and also will be creating a children's picture book of their own in the following weeks.

Grande 6 and 7 Board Game language project

Grade 6 and 7 students are currently working on creating a board game that is connected to the novels they read in class. We have looked at existing board games and the type of creative thinking that is involved in creating these types of games. Students have computer and class time to work on this project. Some work will also need to be done at home. This is a group project in the way that there will be one game created per group. Students will be assessed individually based on their own work that lead to the development of the game. Each student and group will submit a form stating how the work was divided. Students please bring in material that your group can use such as cardboard boxes, dice, timers etc.

GAMES ARE DUE: Wednesday, February 22nd. Tuesday Feb. 21st will be the last day groups can put together all items to create their games. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Grade 8 History Test

Grade 8 students will have their final history class and assessment for this subject on Thursday, Jan. 26th. On Tuesday, Jan. 24th we will spend part of the class doing preparation and practice questions. The test will cover ONLY material in chapter # 9 of the history text "Canada and the Coming of the First World War". The test will be OPEN BOOK. Test questions will comprise of all types of questions (knowledge, thinking and application). It is VERY important that students review the chapter at home to be familiar with the content and therefore will be able to complete the necessary critical thinking required for success.

We will begin the subject of geography in February.
