Grade 8 Language Short Stories

Your good copy of your short story is due tomorrow (Thursday, May 31st). It should be typed out, double spaced and approximately 3-4 pages (no more than 4!!) You should be working on the revising and editing steps of the writing process, since you've had 2 weeks of class time to work on this story.

Bring in a photo, object, text (story, joke, article. birthday card etc) or video that makes you laugh!! You are not going to explain why you think it's funny. We are simply going to read/observe your object and comment on it.

**** If you have missed the last couple of Language classes where we discussed sameness vs diversity in our society, you will have an extension on this assignment and will need to come and see me so you can get the info/notes/questions we have been working on in class.

Find the following terms in chapters 11-15, record the page number where you found it as well as the sentence it's in. Then define the term (write out the definition or give a synonym for the word).

Answer the following questions;
1. How did Jonas's relationship with his friends and family change after he received his assignment?
2. Why did the Community give up the ability to see colour?
3. Why was it important for the community to have a person who could "see beyond"?
4. According to The Giver, why does Jonas have to receive and store memories of pain?
5. Why do you think the author put the memory of war in a separate chapter instead of making it part of another chapter?

These questions and definitions are due tomorrow. They should be complete since you had 3 language periods to work on them on Wednesday, Jan 11th.

Grade 8 Language - "The Giver" - Your Assignment Questioins

So, you have been given your "Assignment" by your peers. Answer the following questions based on your new career....You may need to scan through the chapters in order to get more information about what type of skills/characteristics one needs for the Assignment.

1. How do you feel about your new assignment? Do you agree with the choices your peers made? Do you think you will enjoy it or despise it? Explain why.

2. List all the skills and characteristics you need for your "Assignment".

3. Describe what the training might be like (Descriptions may be outlined in novel already).

4. If you could have chosen your own "Assignment", what would it be and why?

5. What skills/characterisitcs do you think you possess that are better suited for the Assignment you would have chosen?

6. Think about the Committee of Elders who observe the children for countless hours. It says in the novel that the committee rarely chooses the wrong assignment for the twelves because decisions are based on the interestes and abilities of the children. Do you think this system is an effective way to choose careers? Explain your answer.

Chapter 6 and 7 Summaries are due tomorrow. You must also have a list of vocabulary words with their definitions and/or synonyms.

Also, you were to record the details of a dream you have had in your journal.

For homework tonight, you must complete a chapter summary for chapters 1-3. You should also have a list of new words for each chapter.

Looking ahead....

1. Write about three connections between the novel and the real world.
2. Write three open-ended questions about what you've read so far. Open-ended questions are questions that don't have one right answer and require more than a simple yes or no response.

You are not required to work on your assignment this weekend. I have booked 6 computer/library timeslots for next week just for this assignment. If you use your class time wisely, you should not need to work on the research portion, or the rough draft at home. However, editing final copies and finishing touches may need to be done at home the weekend before it is due. Due date is November 16th.

Explanation Text Assignment - DUE DATE: Wednesday, November 16th.

You will be submitting your explanation text in one of the following formats; poster, pamphlet, guide, news article, brochure, or website. Everything MUST BE TYPED!!

Expectations:
1) You must have a minimum of 3 well written paragraphs (description, location, facts/explanations)
2) Each paragraph must have an original subheading.
3) Paragraphs must;
-get increasingly complex
-have descriptive words and action verbs
-correct spelling, grammar and writing conventions
-be written in present tense
-be in logical order
-be in your own words!!!!!
4)Minimum of 5 facts
5)Pictures (minimum of 1) must have captions
6)Definitions/new terminology
7)Text boxes
8) Minimum of 3 sources listed on your final product (one from a book/textbook, one from a website and one from a video or movie clip)

***** You will be given SEVERAL language periods to work on the computer and in the library to do research. The majority of this assignment should be done AT SCHOOL!!

Grade 8 Language and Art

Reading Logs and the 2nd art assignment were due today. A few students handed their work in to me, but I must admit, I did forget to collect them from everyone during language and art today. I will be collecting both items on Monday morning.
Enjoy the extra time to complete them if you haven't done so yet!

8 Language - Superhuman Feats!!

What is a "superhuman feat"? It is a task completed by a human that required extensive training of the mind and/or body and seems impossible or unbelievable to the average human.

Research a person who has demonstrated a superhuman feat and answer the following questions:
Who? What? Where? Why? When? How?
Also, have the websites listed where you found the info.

You will present your information to the class on Tuesday. Be Prepared!!!
